honduran deaf school

Our school for the deaf began when a Honduran pastor had a son that was born deaf. They were isolated and far away from any type of help.  Education was always important to our founder, Sister Jean Isbell, and to Brother John Taylor. Years later God impress the same challenge to Eleanor Cooper who became the “Spiritual Mother” after Jean passed.  They had already established the first Bible School on the island of Roatan, as well as a bilingual school for younger children on the island.  The bible school was destroyed by a hurricane before we could use it. During his numerous trips into the interior of the country John Taylor encounter a young son of a pastor who was deaf.

Upon meeting this child John knew that he would not be properly accepted or have a chance to learn a trade without a proper education. He became determined that handicapped people were not to be left out. Everyone can be used by God and is valuable.  It took some doing, but we got him to a Christian school for the deaf, and sponsored the whole family to learn sign language. Brother John took on that financial responsibility. He has sponsored many students other students over the years.

Today, that boy has grown into a man of God. We are very proud of him. He and his mother now run the deaf school together on the Northern coast of the mainland where they teach sign language. They also teach them how to share the Gospel with other deaf people, and various ways of learning a trade, such as wood working.

Many godly people have given to make this school for the deaf possible. We recently received a very large donation from a precious donor who oversaw the building of an entire wing to the school. He also purchased a vehicle, and they continue to help us in many other ways. We have also partnered with Alabama Honduras Medical Educational Network (AHMEN) because they share our desire to show the love of Christ in Honduras through medical relief, education, sewing centers, and other humanitarian reliefs.

We need your help in order for this ministry to continue serving deaf children who are still in need, and we hope to soon include other children with handicaps.  The costs for housing, feeding, teaching each child at the deaf school is $150/month.  Would you please pray about helping us reach these handicapped kids?  No donation is too small, and the Lord supplies the increase.  Remembering that the widow’s two mites were recognized by our Lord Jesus, should help us all to realize that it is not the size of our offering that matters, but the heart.
