Feeding the children

Honduras is the second-poorest country in this hemisphere, with 60% living in poverty according to the CIA World Factbook.  The extreme poverty, especially for the children, was one of the first things that Sister Jean Isbell saw from her earliest years in the country. In those years, the Isbell family lived like everyone else. They struggled just to eat and clothe themselves.

On all of her annual trips back to America, Sister Jean began to spread the word about the kind of poverty that is rampant in Honduras.  As support began to build, the mission was able to start feeding the children. Initially she placed children with families that were able to “adopt” them. This was done for many years.

Our first large feeding project on the mainland, began at the city dump in La Ceiba, Honduras in 1991 Sister Eleanor came to Dan Isbell with a plea for help. She would encounter hungry children living in the dump. They would come out to the street begging for food. That work still continues to this day.  We have one in Limon. We also have two kitchens on the island of Roatan, and a small one in the mountains of Yoro, but many of our other churches have also began to feed the needy in their local communities throughout the country.

Some of the things we end up providing for, besides food are medical checkups, good hygiene training, educating the mothers, a few sewing classes, and providing school uniforms. They can’t go to school without one.  Costs do vary. In La Ceiba’s city dump the costs averages out to be 1$ per child per week for two meals. This works out to just under $5/month per child.  Unfortunately, we had to close some feeding programs due to lack of funds. At one time, we were feeding approximately 1200/week, and we believe with your help we can eclipse that number.

The reason we keep on feeding the hungry is because of a haunting question asked of our Lord.  'Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink?...  ‘I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me.” (Matthew 25:34 -46, NIV)
